Edmond Urbanist commends the Edmond Planning Commission's unanimous 4-0 vote Tuesday, Jan. 7, to take the first step in officially removing discriminatory racial restrictions from the original plat for Highland Park Addition, an historic neighborhood in Edmond's urban core.
While courts have ruled these racist neighborhood restrictions unenforceable, they are still a stain on the history of Edmond and its great neighborhoods. Home ownership documents are some of the most treasured valuables an American family can have, and property documents should reflect compliance with state and federal laws and the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
Edmond Urbanist appreciates the work of community stakeholders, the City of Edmond, and state lawmakers in beginning this process, and we hope the Edmond City Council will give its final approval to amending the Highland Park plat at its upcoming Jan. 13 meeting.
